Kyra is one of the founders of SEIPS and SEIE, and now works as the Technical Manager of engineering services. She specializes in project management, system design, project feasibility, interconnection, and system modeling. She entered the solar industry full-time in 2008, after completing a PV design and installation course at SEI, and has since managed and created full electrical construction documents for PV systems totaling over 200MW.

Kyra manages the design work at SEI Engineering, overseeing dozens of megawatts of projects at any given time. During her time at SEIE she has overseen the designs of complex rooftop designs up to 2 megawatts and ground mount systems up to 27 megawatts.

Her extensive experience in the industry suite her well for her role as the leader of the SEIE’s design team. Her first job in the solar industry was with Southern Energy Management (SEM) in Morrisville, NC, as a solar technician, where she gained a firm technical foundation. As the NC PV industry exploded in 2009, she quickly moved into commercial designer role within the company. In 2012, she left SEM to pursue a Master’s Degree at Duke University with a focus on power markets. Her research at Duke investigated the operational, economic and environmental effects of integrating large amounts of photovoltaic generation onto the grid. This was completed by building a test grid and optimization model that simulated the hourly generator dispatch at different levels of PV penetration.

After achieving her Master’s Degree, she set up her own consulting company and provided various design and feasibility services for many companies within the industry. During this time she also worked with SEI as a curriculum developer. In addition to her current role at SEIPS and SEIE, she continues to provide instruction through at SEI at national conferences such as SPI and Intersolar.

Joe is one of the founders of SEIPS and SEIE, and now works as Technical Manager. He specializes in project management, system design, installation methods, and performance verification of solar electric systems. Joe has provided technical services for PV businesses and PV system owners for over a decade. He has held numerous positions in the industry and brings his years of experience into the daily operations of SEIPS and SEIE.

Joe’s primary responsibilities include oversight of project managers and contactors by providing technical and logistical support during the execution of projects. He is directly involved with developing and negotiating contract terms with clients, budgeting, and business development. He performs system design work, is proficient in AutoCAD, and independently manages select SEIE projects. Additionally, Joe continues to work on a part-time basis as a PV technical trainer and curriculum developer for Solar Energy International. His position on SEI’s PV curriculum team allows him to be closely involved with the creation and revision cycles of SEI’s course content for both grid-direct and battery-based PV classes.

Jeff is a founder of SEIPS and SEIE and started with SEIPS in January of 2015. He acts as the Business Manager for both entities, and as the Owner and registered Professional Engineer at SEIE for licensure purposes across the U.S. His responsibilities include business development, negotiating and executing contracts, resolving legal issues, reporting to the SEI Board of Directors, and oversight of many administrative tasks, IT systems development, marketing, and of course engineering.

Jeff received his Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering degree from California State University, Fresno in 1993. He has been self-employed in various companies since 1996 when he ventured away from his first job at a consulting engineering firm in Boulder, Colorado to partner with local builders to form a company focused on straw bale construction. From 1996 to the present he has been part or full owner of three design and construction companies, one of which still exists solely as a consulting engineering firm, Odisea LLC, in Paonia, Colorado.

Kris Sutton is a founder of SEIPS and SEIE and has worked full-time in the PV industry since 1999. Kris was a NABCEP Certified Installation Professional™. He regularly teaches technical trainings on the design, installation of photovoltaic systems–both commercial and residential, with a heavy emphasis on safety. He has been employed as an installer, project manager, and owned his own solar consulting business working with utilities, architects, engineers, general contractors, building departments, and homeowners through all phases of the PV design and installation process. Kris serves as Solar Energy International’s Instructor-Trainer and helps develop curriculum. NABCEP Certified Solar PV Installer

Rebekah Hren is a founder of SEIPS and SEIE and has been teaching PV installation and design courses for Solar Energy International since 2007. A North Carolina native, her focus is quality control, Code-compliance, commissioning and maintenance for systems of all sizes, with a particular focus on utility-scale arrays. Rebekah is a licensed electrical contractor and NABCEP Certified PV Installation Professional. She frequently writes technical articles for Home Power and SolarPro magazines, and has co-authored several books: A Solar Buyer’s Guide for Home and Office, and The Carbon-Free Home. Rebekah spends a lot of her free time pondering the meaning of the National Electrical Code.

Brian Mehalic has over 17 years of experience designing, installing, inspecting, and servicing all types and sizes of PV and energy storage systems. He began his career as Lead Technician and Project Manager at EV Solar Products in Arizona, and then became Project Engineer for O2 Energies in North Carolina, working with the developer on system design, performance modeling, and performing quality assurance inspections on over 100 megawatts of ground-mounted PV. Currently he is a Senior Technical Adviser for SEI Professional Services, providing services including system engineering and quality assurance, commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintenance; an Instructor and Curriculum Developer for Solar Energy International; and a member of NEC^® Code Making Panel 4.
